I happen to be reading about moral panics (research for an upcoming book, I hope, and for a chapter in a book on the Gutenberg Age I'm just finishing ... I hope). As a media person, I fixate on media's role in them. Moral panics around drug use were not without basis in fact, of course, but the essence of a moral panic is that there was often inflation of numbers and disproportionate reaction to reality. You remind me of that here.
